Sara West

Community Coordinator

“It is a gift to work with such a passionate team, supporting folks to grow not just food, but community. GIY reminds me we are connected and each have potential to grow.”

Sara’s background weaves together work in administration, across public, non-profit and higher education sectors, supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness, and working with young people in educational settings. A gender studies and political science graduate of Rutgers University, in her home state of New jersey, Sara went on to earn her MSc in Children & Youth Studies at University College Dublin’s School of Education. She honed her research skills investigating the role of mindfulness practices in Irish primary schools as a tool for supporting children’s rights and wellbeing. She also recently completed her 300hr training as a Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) facilitator with the Justice Resource Institute.

A gardener from the heart, Sara is usually GIY-ing in her spare time and swapping seeds and stories with neighbours in her front garden. As GIY’s Community Coordinator, Sara is rooted in supporting and connecting communities to cultivate healthier and more sustainable futures by growing some of their own food.

GIY stories

Meet some of our GIYers (that’s people who grow some of their own food) who all champion Food Empathy – a deeper understanding and connection with food from their experience of growing. If you want food done right, then grow it yourself.
