Michael Kelly GIY Founder
Michael Kelly Founder of GIY
Michael quit his IT sales job and moved to a rural idyll in county Waterford to pursue his dream of writing and living off the land. Over ten years later, he has written 3 books, has written countless articles, inspired 500,000 people to grow food in 2017 alone and is a self-taught food-growing expert. Establishing GIY in 2009 so that he could find support for his own food growing efforts the organisation has gone from strength to strength, now working with partners to empower people to grow food at home, school, work and in the community. Taking his passion and knowledge to the small screen on our national broadcaster is a dream come true. Michael hopes GROW COOK EAT will be a catalyst for change on a national scale, inspiring a significant portion of Irish people to take to the soil and recognise that growing food is for everyone.
Michael is a member of the Irish Food Writers Guild and The Taste Council, and received the ‘Local Food Hero’ award at the 2017 Irish Restaurant Awards. His third book, GROW COOK EAT, received a Gourmand World Cookbook Award and is now on its second print run after selling out in 2017.
Michael now lives in Dunmore East with his wife Eilish and two little GIYers. He first pitched the notion of a TV show about food growing in 2011 but now it’s a reality he’s fierce nervous about being on the telly.
