I’ve often wondered why myself and Karen didn’t feel more nervous when we started filming the show. After all neither of us had ever really done TV before. I had done the odd piece to camera for the news, Nationwide and that sort of thing, but this was on a different scale altogether. To be actually presenting a TV series? Jesus, who would have thought it??
And yet if I was asked to pick a word to describe the vibe when we were filming, it would not be ‘stress’ or ‘panic’ or ‘feeling like vomiting while having my make-up applied’. The word instead would be ‘craic’. We just had brilliant fun over a 6 month filming period. And by the way, there was no make-up applied. Well, not much anyway.
It helped of course that we were in such good hands with our fantastic production team from InProduction and Nomos. Our producer David, director Robin and all the crew made us feel like we were brilliant even when we weren’t. I can’t be sure about this, but they also seemed to be having a great time every time they came to HQ (nice setting, good coffee and great grub) and freakishly the weather always seemed to play ball.
I made a promise to myself early last year that I was going to enjoy every moment of filming, because let’s be honest it’s a pretty amazing opportunity and might never happen again (though obviously we hope it will). But that was only part of the reason why I was able to enjoy it.
Bottom line, I think it’s because everyone in GIY is ‘cause to the core’ and we all have a sense that this show is fundamentally all about the cause. Every year we look for new ways to get people growing in their droves, and this is the ultimate way to do that. So, we are all aware of the scale of opportunity this represents for the cause, and we are ready to take advantage of it.
Literally days before we started filming the GIY team were scrambling to get the set ready at GROW HQ: building the greenhouse, planting up the TV garden, painting the fences (in on-brand colours of course). While Karen and I are out front as presenters – everyone in GIY has played their part in making this happen. How was I able to enjoy it so much? Because this was a team effort, and it’s always fun to be part of a team.
We hope you enjoy the first episode on Wednesday night. We had an absolute blast making it.
