GIY raises €250,000 in 78-day corporate challenge
AIB, Three Mobile, Applegreen and SSE Airtricity among companies investing in GROW HQ and the health of their employees.
GIY has announced the successful completion of its GROW Circle Challenge in which it was seeking 20 companies to invest in the health of their employees and in GROW HQ, GIY’s €1.4m national Food Education Centre. The corporate challenge raised €250,000 for the project in just 78 days, exceeding the target set for it by €50,000.
Launched in February, the challenge was designed to both raise the final funds for GROW HQ, and to help employees to re-connect with their food by growing some of it themselves at work. Each of the 20 companies involved are investing in GROW HQ in return for a range of HR, CSR and PR benefits. GIY will provide the companies with a food growing programme for up to 40 people each year for 3 years – which can be used for employees or clients, or donated to a local charity, community group or school.
GROW Circle members from Waterford include Dawn Meats, Walsh Bakehouse, Chia Bia, The Whitfield Clinic, Bausch & Lomb, Caulfields Supervalu, Waterford Stanley and The Granville Hotel. The innovative nature of the fundraiser also struck a chord with leading corporate brands nationally with AIB, Three Mobile, SSE Airtricity, Miele, Java Republic, SAP Landscapes, Sport Works, Real Nation, Cré, Applegreen and Renault Ireland joining.
GROW HQ, the home of the GIY movement, opened Waterford in October 2016, creating over 20 jobs and helping GIY to support over 100,000 people each year to live healthier and more sustainably by growing some of their own food. In addition to the development of its ground-breaking urban food centre, GIY has expanded in to the UK and in 2016 supported over 3,500 schools and 1,500 workplaces to grow their own food there for the first time in partnerships with innocent drinks and Cully & Sully.
Michael Kelly of GIY says: “It has been a phenomenal 78 days and we are really grateful to all 20 companies that joined the GROW Circle in this challenge. We look forward to working with them and their staff in the years ahead, helping them to reconnect with their food. In terms of GROW HQ, our focus now shifts from fundraising to completing the build project and planning for the opening in September. It’s incredibly exciting for us to see the simple message of food empathy resonating with some of Ireland’s leading corporate brands.”
GROW HQ will be the home of the GIY movement internationally and a place where people can come to immerse themselves in growing, cooking and eating food. It will contain a grow school, cookery school, café, shop and training gardens. The urban location opposite the hospital creates a once-in-a-generation opportunity to start a new conversation about food and health.
