GIY’s response to the COVID 19 crisis is a national call to action to get people growing their own food at home, giving them the skills, knowledge and resources that they need to do so successfully
For the majority of people, the best way to contribute to Ireland’s response to this global public health crisis is to stay positive and stay home. People need to stay physically and mentally well and connected with their family, friends, neighbours or broader community whilst adhering to public health guidelines. Food growing offers a new challenge and a mindful dose of fresh air and optimism, with the promise of great homegrown food to look forward to. It also confronts the vulnerable feeling of not knowing where your food comes from, replacing it with a GIYer’s pride.
With your help, our content and 5,000 Seed Boxes, together we can GROW It Forward and help 50,000 people to grow some of their own food. Here’s how:
We have created a seed bundle of the easiest (no sweetcorn here!), most prolific and best loved (the ever-popular and highly nutritious salads, beetroot and carrots) vegetables for you to grow and share as little seedlings, plants in pots or the produce at harvest time.
Seed Boxes will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and our challenge to you is to commit to growing something for yourself and 10 others. Use your knowledge and experience to give these seeds the best start and then gift them on to others in your network to get them growing.
We will also send you a weekly newsletter to guide you through the process and make sure your early summer seedlings can be passed on in adherence to the latest public health guidance at the time.
Registrations for our free seed packs have officially closed. You can still take part in #GrowItForward by committing to grow something for yourself and 10 others. Seeds are available to buy from our shop and you can get growing tips & tricks by signing up for our weekly newsletter.
